Halloween was great! Way better than in Germany.
Well carving pumpkins was the same but the costumes, decorations and the amount of people that participated was amazing. And all the Halloween and pumpkin themed things at all the stores.
Long before October Shauna already knew what costumes to choose. My host family always dresses up together every year. This year it was the Addams family. To get into our characters we watched the movie a few days before.
As it was finally Halloween we carved our pumpkins last minute, put them to the front door with a bucket full of candy (Americans do this if they aren’t at home for trick or treat so the kids can just take one or two pieces), dressed up, sprayed a huge amount of black hair die in my hair and went to a friends house for a dinner and trick or treat.
The food was great! As we all went off for getting all the candy, I was amazed that almost every house was decorated with giant inflatables, light effects and spooky stuff, more than at German houses at Christmas. And so many people sat in front of their houses or in their houses to give candy. When they weren’t at home they had buckets and only a very small number didn’t give anything.
As our bags filled up my feet started to hurt really bad because I wore doc martens that I borrowed from a friend. But they where two (American) sizes to small so I kept on going bear feet. We got sooo much candy and the best was that I never tried so much of it. For example: butterfinger, Hershey’s, twizzlers, tootsie roll , 3 musketeers , Almond joy, Milk duds , whoppers...
On the way back we did two haunted houses. This is when people put a lot of work in turning their whole house into a “Geisterbahn “. Then you can walk through it and they will scare you and you have to walk past more or less scary things.
The first one was good but at the second one every thing was full of fog and the guys of the haunted house even told us a story about it and sneaked behind us to scare us. It was great. I think no one in Germany would do that.
We where very successful and got a lot of candy and I have to show the German how to celebrate Halloween next year.
